Grid layout on 5 main breakpoints in Adobe XD

Every UI designer learns Adobe XD to make user interfaces with interactivity. And it is really an amazing tool to learn if you are planning to make career in the field of UI designing. Adobe XD is a vector UI application.

Glimpse of its history: Adobe XD was first announced for designing and prototyping with the name “Adobe Comet” in the year of 2015. It was then released for MacOS in March 2016 and for Window in December on same year. It got its real name that we all know today in the year of 2017.

Talking about its features; we have numerous to add in the list, from creating wireframes of webpages to designing stunning mock-ups in no time. It is also good at adding interactivity with the help of prototype.

Now, we are coming on the topic.

Grid layout prepares the foundation of the UI in XD. We need to follow it maintain consistency across different layout and to make fast design. A grid gives good control in alignment and it also helps us in defining the layout for different screen sizes.

Grid in XD has 3 primary components: column, gutter, and margin.

Columns

In Adobe XD the column are imaginary. Actually, they are vertical blocks. It is used for alignment of the contents. We define the column width in percentage (%) for fixed value.

Gutter

Gutters are space between the columns. Gutter help to keep separation between the content. We always define the width of gutter as fixed values.

Margin

Margins are the space between the content and the edges of the artboards. The side margin of widths as fixed as value that decide the breathing space in every screen size.

Flexible margin is the remaining the space between the left side after the composing a grid with the help of column, gutter, and the third is side margin.

The flexible margin is change as per the different-different screen size.

Breakpoint

A breakpoint is the range of screen size where the layout is re-adjust for the available screen size for view the best layout that make.

Column structure, column width, gutter width, and the margin depend upon the breakpoint. Containers stack or scale as per the different breakpoint for the best possible view.

A column resize the scale down smaller screen has sufficient available space for fit the content. Column stacks vertically content cannot fit with available screen at the smaller screen.

A Grid functions in three different ways across different breakpoint.

Fixed Grids

Fixed grid has fixed- width and the flexible margins.

Fluid or Full-Width Grids

Fluid grid has fluid-width columns, fixed gutter and fixed side margins. The fluid grid has flexible content width. The flexible content width goes the edge to edge as depend as the screen size. In fluid grid, column grows or shrinks to the available space.

Hybrid Grid

The Hybrid Grid have the both flexible and the fixed width component.

A few element completely bleed-off grid and the align edge to edge on that screen. Header, and the footers, visible containers or images are few are the common example.
